Tax lives in too many places.
Workings sit in spreadsheets, support in PDFs and decisions in email. Import records, customs plans and related-party agreements are kept apart from the books. Reconciliation takes months, and transfer pricing is left until year end.
A question from the tax authority, an auditor or management means pulling figures and papers from many files and inboxes. Much of the answer depends on who still remembers.
Tax positions and their workings are rebuilt each year in new spreadsheets, often by different people. Last year’s reasoning is hard to find, so the same work is done again rather than done better.
